The Fast And Furious 4 (must watch)

It would be easy to overlook this relatively low budget action film and while The Fast and the Furious 4 might be short on stars, there's some top stunt driving in this story about a cop infiltrating a wild group of street racers in Los Angeles.

On the darkened streets of LA, kids illegally race souped-up cars at speeds of over 150 mph. That's problem enough for the police, but when a series of daring raids on moving trucks seems to be connected with the tribe of boy racers, they decide it's time to get inside their heads. In terms of what is on offer, it is no more than you might expect from the title.

The movie is mindless, hectic and keeps the speed of action going throughout. Vin Diesel is a genuine action hero as gang leader Dominic and while the plot isn't complicated, it is something to catch the viewer's interest. But most of all it has car chases and plenty of high-speed crashes. Tough and intimidating, Dominic is also willing to accord respect where it's due, and after a blistering race in which undercover cop Brian (Paul Walker) almost blows his car apart while giving a run for his money, Dominic welcomes the outsider into his circle, much to the consternation of other gang members.

Bonding over their love of cars and both having done time in the joint, Dominic and Brian have to contend with one violent enemy, Chinese hoodlum Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), whose gang ride around on motorikes, shooting up anything in sight. Brian's work colleagues want to crack the criminal ring but he himself is becoming more enmeshed in the lives of his new friends - until the seed of doubt is planted by one of the Dominic's gang.

When his cover is blown, tempers rise - but the friendship still comes through when Brian takes a risk in protecting his gang mates.This story of speed-crazy grown-up kids was made purely to entertain. It trades on many movie conventions: Primal passions, elemental rivalries, testosterone-charged confrontations, youthful male preoccupation with top dog status, iconic posturing and the sheer excitement of the chase.

As an action movie it passes all the tests and offers edge-of-your-seat thrills throughout.
